Lansing Summer Lunchbox Final Distributions ApproachingLansing Summer Lunchbox Final Distributions Approaching
New this year, the Lansing Summer Lunchbox program has been working closely with the Lansing Food Pantry to supply families in the district with monthly boxes of food. The program’s final distributions are scheduled to take place early next week and families are encouraged to sign up to receive a box by using the following link: Summer Lunchbox Sign-Up. Simply provide a valid email address and phone number to receive a reminder about picking up the lunchbox.
Final distributions will take place on Tuesday, August 27 and Wednesday, August 28 from 4:30 to 7:30 pm. Both distributions will be held at the Community Recreation Center (The Rink).
This program is open to all families who have students enrolled in Lansing Schools (includes preschool siblings). Donations are provided by the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, including breakfast and lunch staples such as cereal, juice, pancake mix, canned tuna and chicken, soup, pasta, rice and beans.
Snack items such as Cheetos, granola bars and popcorn are included in the boxes when available. Perishable items, such as fresh fruit, are also supplied in the monthly distributions. Green grapes, plums and cantaloupes will be included in the August lunchboxes.
Lansing Summer Lunchbox Coordinator, Susan Tabrizi, urges many families in the district to take advantage of the food supplies during the last month of the summer. Tabrizi is the parent of two children who attend Lansing Schools and an active member within the district, serving as vice president on the Lansing Board of Education. Tabrizi is thrilled to kick off the Lansing Summer Lunchbox and hopes to extend this program into other school breaks, such as winter and spring recess.
“I’ve always had an interest in food security and now I’m in a position where I can do something about it,” said Tabrizi.
Tabrizi credits the Lansing community in playing a major role in the success of the Lansing Summer Lunchbox program. The Lansing Market donated cardboard boxes for the food packaging process and around 40 volunteers from Cayuga Lake Seido Karate helped pack the boxes, preparing them for distribution to families.
“I’m grateful for and humbled by the community response in supporting this program and making it a reality,” said Tabrizi.
As of July, around 100 children in the Lansing Central School District have benefitted from this program throughout the summer.
