The Lansing PTSO is comprised of parents, teachers and students interested in making the Lansing Schools an enriching, productive, and inclusive environment for our students and community.  We support the school district through volunteer efforts inside/outside of the classroom, funding resources, and family-oriented events and programming.

What's New?

 January 23 - February 17

Warm Up Your Winter with STEAM 2.0 - January 23 - February 17
Mark your calendars and save these dates as STEAM 2.0 is rolling into Lansing! For the 2nd year in a row, the PTSO has teamed up with parents, teachers, students and community organizations to create exciting activities and programs exclusive to our Lansing community! Get ready for some fun as we explore Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math this winter.  Follow the excitement using #LansingNYSTEAM on social media. Look for pictures and updates on our facebook page!

January 24-27: Elementary Math-a-Thon
For the 2nd year, all RC Buckley elementary students (465 of them!) will be counting down to their STEAM Night with a school-wide math-a-thon!  Each morning for 4 days, the whole school will drop everything and complete 2 minutes of math facts.  Each day of the Math-a-Thon is supported by a local business who has graciously made a donation or is sponsoring a penny-per-problem. Last year, the students solved an average of 12,000 math facts per day! WOW!

January 27: Elementary STEAM Night, 6-8pm
STEAM night for elementary families will be on January 27 from 6-8pm!  The elementary school will be filled with fun, hands-on stations including origami, paper airplanes, build your own marble runs, team challenges, Legos and more -- including the Scholastic book fair!

January 28: Lansing Day @ the Johnson Art Museum, 10am-5pm
Free and open to all Lansing families, come explore the Johnson Art Museum at Cornell University from 10am-5pm on January 28. Studio activities will be available in the morning that explore the detective-type science needed to analyze and interpret. The afternoon will feature a self-guided "gallery hunt" designed just for Lansing Day! Best of all, be sure to check-out the breathtaking views from the 5th floor.

February 4: Middle School STEAM Saturday, 1:15-3:45pm
Coming to LMS from 1:15-3:45pm on February 4 is an afternoon of awesomeness, beginning with a Science Fair featuring middle school students and local professionals, followed by workshop sessions. Students may register to enter a science fair project and/or register for two of the following:

  • Art in the pursuit of science: Discover the ways scientists use art to study and communicate about the world around us with guests from the Lab of Ornithology
  • Biodiversity & Conservation: Be a conservation officer for the day and learn how the "people factor" comes into play when deciding which endangered species should be protected and how.  Also, discover how the physics of sound relates to underwater communications and more!
  • Race Car Design: Do you like to design?  Then come meet the the Cornell Racing Team as they show off their Formula One ARG16 race car! The engineering team will explain about the designed and building process.
  • Applied Coding: Curious how software, like apps and video games, make our phones/tablets "smart"? In this workshop, Cornell's Women in Computing will lead students as they explore the different ways that we can tell a computer what to do. We'll write some code and give commands to a robot!
  • Crafty with Chemistry: Make something artistic through chemistry experiments with the Ithaca College Chemistry Club.

February 11: High School STEAM Saturday, 11am - 2pm
This super STEAM Saturday will feature workshops and activities (hosted by special guests from Cornell and Ithaca College) that explore digital art and music, experiential science, a Wiggle Bot building competition, build organs using JELL-O and much more! Amazing tech gear prizes from Adobe will be given away and a free pizza social provided! All HS students will receive an email from Principal Ledley to sign up for their workshops when online registration opens later this month.

February 12: Lansing goes to the Movies!
As a surprise addition to STEAM month, PTSO has sponsored 100 tickets for members of our school community to see Hidden Figures!  This inspirational STEAM-themed movie is based on the true story of the african-american women working at NASA who were instrumental in getting John Glenn into orbit during America's space with Russia in the 1960's! As of 2/11, tickets are currently sold-out.

February 17: Lansing Viewing Night @ Cornell's Fuertes Observatory, 6-8pm

An exclusive viewing for Lansing families will be held from 6:00-8:00pm. Space can be limited, please RSVP if you’re interested in attending.
