Please review the following bus safety rules with your child.  Harassment, Intimidation, or Bullying will not be tolerated. 

 

GUIDELINES FOR WAITING AND ARRIVING

1. Be on time: Arrive 5 minutes ahead of your scheduled bus stop time.

2. Dress for the weather. Wear clothing that is safe, visible, and warm.

3. Carry your belongings in a book bag.

4. Show respect and care for the property of others.

5. Don’t bring pets, small children, or large objects to the bus stop.

6. Don’t talk or go with strangers.

7. Stand back from the road at your bus stop (down the driveway or another safe place--and off snowbanks).

8. Do not play at the bus stop or school loading zone.

9. No pushing or fighting at the Bus Stop.

GUIDELINES WHILE ON THE SCHOOL BUS

1. Listen to and follow all instructions of your school bus driver.

2. Remain seated at all times while the bus is moving.

3. Keep aisles clear; stow bags on your lab not on your back.

4. Do not shout or yell. It distracts the driver.

5. Never throw things in, out, or at the bus.

6. Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before standing up to exit.

7. No sharp objects, matches, lighters, unsafe objects, or weapons of any kind are allowed on the bus.

8. Do not litter, damage seats, or otherwise, vandalize the bus.

9. Keep arms/head inside the windows.

10. No eating, drinking, candy, or gum on the school bus.

11. No fighting, spitting, swearing, teasing, provoking others, or inappropriate conversation.

12. Elementary school buses do not allow any toys or electronics on the school bus.

GUIDELINES FOR CROSSING TO THE SCHOOL BUS

1. Never cross between cars; always cross in FRONT of the bus.

2. Look at the driver and wait for the hand signal before crossing the road.

3. Listen and LOOK BOTH WAYS(LEFT—RIGHT—LEFT) for any traffic continuing to move. Continue looking and listening.

4. Do not text, play video games, watch movies, or listen to your electronic devices while crossing.

5. Walk quickly but do not run in a straight line, such that you can see the bus driver’s face at all times.

6. If you drop something near or under the bus, ask the bus driver to help you get it, never attempt to retrieve items while a bus is running.

GUIDELINES FOR CROSSING LEAVING THE SCHOOL BUS

1. Always cross in FRONT of the bus, never behind.

2. Walk forward of the school bus along the side of the road (10 Giant Steps) until you can see the driver’s face.

3. Look at the driver and wait for the signal to begin crossing. Walk straight until you are about even with the center line of the road and stop.

4. Listen, and LOOK BOTH WAYS(LEFT—RIGHT—LEFT) for any traffic continuing to move. Continue looking and listening.  When the road is clear, cross quickly--but do not run.

5. Do not text, play video games, watch movies, or listen to your electronic devices while crossing.

6. If the driver blows the horn, GO BACK to the side of the road and wait for the driver to signal again.

7. If you drop something near or under the bus, ask the driver to help you get it never attempt to retrieve items while a bus is running.

SAFETY CONCERNS

1. Each student on a school bus which is equipped with seat belts, at the bus drivers discretion, shall wear a properly adjusted and fastened seat belt at all times while riding a school bus.  (As of October 1992, all buses must have seat belts. Buses older than 1992 do not have to have seat belts. All buses used by the Lansing Central School District do have seat belts.)

2. Students may not EAT or DRINK on the school bus.  In the event of a sudden stop or maneuver, liquid or foods may become lodged in the throat causing a choking hazard.

3. To prevent being caught in a school bus door or handrail, it is recommended that coat or sweatshirt drawstrings, backpack adjustment straps, or any other dangling or loose items be no more than three inches in length

4. Parents should caution children about attaching key rings and other items to their backpacks/coats as these too may become caught on the handrail or door.

Remember: Riding the school bus is a privilege—not a right. With that privilege comes the responsibility of each student to behave in an orderly and safe manner.
