PLEASE STOP FOR STOPPED SCHOOL BUSES!
This includes the school loading zones as well as the roads. Our children are depending on us!New York State Vehicle Traffic Law § 1174 requires motorist to stop for School Buses that are in the process of receiving or discharging passengers.
- on multiple lane roads
- on a public highway
- on opposite sides of divided highways
- on public streets
- on a private road or parking lot
- on school propert
PENALTIES FOR VIOLATING NY VTL § 1174
Upon conviction, a motorist is facing:- Fine of not less than $250.00 nor more than $400.00 (plus a court surcharge)
- 5 points on your driver’s license
- Potential imprisonment of up to 30 days
- A major insurance merit system violation
Upon a second conviction:
- Fine of not less than $600.00 nor more than $750.00 (plus a court surcharge)
- 5 points on your driver’s license
- Potential imprisonment of up to 180 days
- A major insurance merit system violation
For a third conviction:
- Fine of not less than $750.00 nor more than $1,000.00 (plus a court surcharge)
- 5 points on your driver’s license
- Potential imprisonment of up to 180 days
- A major insurance merit system violation
Carrying Items on the Bus

- No musical instruments bigger than a trumpet or violin are allowed on the bus. If it doesn’t fit between
your knees when you are seated, and doesn’t allow others to be seated with you, use another mode of
transportation. - Backpacks and sports bags are allowed if the student sits back in the seat and is able to have others in
seat. - No fragile items without proper packaging. Don’t transport large posters that can’t be rolled, plants with
dirt, food for snacks, or projects too large to hold on your lap. - No glass on bus.
- Crutches and canes, etc. must be held between your knees while seated.
- Nothing is allowed on the bus that may block aisles or emergency exits.
- No animals of any kind are allowed on the bus, without prior permission and proper containment.
- No aerosol sprays, flammable objects, or anything that would be a safety hazard are allowed.
- No loose sporting equipment such as baseball bats, rackets, skateboards, etc. are allowed.
- Students on buses will play no video games, CD’s, radios, or Walkman’s, which can cause a
distraction. The driver must be able to hear sirens, horns, etc. - Any items brought on the bus are the responsibility of the individual student.
