Lansing High School is launching a new initiative this spring aimed at connecting students with real-world experiences and future opportunities.

Community & Career Day, scheduled for May 19, will bring professionals, businesses, and community members into the school to share their knowledge, experiences, and career pathways with students. The event is designed to give students meaningful exposure to a wide range of professions while strengthening connections between the school and the broader Lansing community.

Throughout the day, students will be able to explore different career paths, ask questions, and take part in experiences that go beyond the typical school day. That could mean listening to a short career talk, participating in a hands-on activity, practicing interview skills, or just having a meaningful conversation with someone about their journey.

The event is intentionally scheduled on District Budget Vote Day, when many community members will already be in the building. It creates a natural opportunity to open the doors, highlight student learning, and bring the community into the school in a different way.

“This is the first year we’re bringing this event together,” said Lansing High School Principal Pat Hornbrook. “Lansing is such a unique community, and we have so many proud graduates and community members who already give so much to our schools. We wanted to create a space where they can connect directly with our students and share their experiences. It gives students a chance to learn from the talent we have right here as they start thinking about where they want to go in life. My hope is that this becomes something we look forward to every year, for both our students and our community.”

Organizers are hoping to bring in a wide range of perspectives and experiences. They are looking for volunteers from fields such as healthcare, business and entrepreneurship, finance and accounting, STEM, education, arts and design, communications, hospitality, sales and marketing, legal and law enforcement, and the skilled trades, along with many others. The goal is to reflect the diversity of pathways available to students after high school.

There are many ways to get involved. Volunteers can speak about their career, lead a demonstration or hands-on activity, offer information about internships or job opportunities, participate in mock interviews, or simply spend time talking with students about their career journey.

Community & Career Day will take place on May 19, with flexible participation throughout the day. Volunteers are welcome to join anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., and can stay for as little or as long as their schedule allows.
